Casa del Pavo

It is undoubtedly one of the most emblematic private buildings in Alcoy, a reflection of the economic strength that the city experienced at the beginning of the 20th century. This modernist-style house was built between 1908-1909 by the architect Vicente Pascual Pastor with the collaboration of one of the greatest exponents of 19th century Alcoyan painting, Fernando Cabrera Cantó, who turned it into his studio. Of its façade, the forged works of viewpoints and balconies, the mosaic finish, as well as the turkey that finishes off the lintels of its doors –for which the house receives that name– and the cast iron knobs stand out.

Casa de la Cultura

The need to have currency for the weekly payment of payrolls for industry workers, required the opening of an office of the Bank of Spain in Alcoy, one of the few cases that occurred in cities that were not provincial capital. Installed in Alcoy since 1884, the Banco de España occupied different provisional headquarters until this monumental neoclassical building was built in 1927, with large columns and decorated pediments. Coinciding with the closure of these offices, in 1982, the Bank of Spain donated the building for cultural use to the Alcoy City Council, being rehabilitated for La Casa de la Cultura, the Public Library and the Municipal Archive.

Historical Artistic Complex

Modernism left Alcoya complete catalog of architectural samples, which were raised under the heading of stil nouveau. Alcoy’s old town is heir to urban planning in the second half of the 19th century, although its streets bear the mark of the pioneer city of the Spanish industrial revolution. Streets such as Santa Rita, San Mauro, San Antonio or San Blas teach small characters cast in iron, sample of the powerful metallurgical industry.

Medieval Set

In 1256 the Christian foundation of the Villa de Alcoy dates, and from 1305 it had its first urban expansion or suburb that in the 14th century was called Pobla Nova de Sant Jordi or Vilanova d’Alcoi. The Raval Vell was defended by a wall and several towers, of which the remains of the so-called Torre de l’Andana (in Placeta de les Xiques), Torre de N’Aiça and Torre-portal de Riquer, which have been preserved, At the same time, it was the access door to the town through the old way of Castilla or Madrid. At the beginning of the 18th century, on the occasion of the War of Succession, a bastion was built next to the Torre de N’Aiça. Years later, the towers were adapted for housing and a wider door – called Arc de Sant Roc- – was opened on the wall of Carrer de la Puríssima, to allow carriage access through Carrer de Sant Roc.
